THINGZ
/ˈθɪŋz/ · heard as “sinks”
Parrot's practice screen: the sentence about the northern lights with “things” marked red because it was heard as “sinks” and “beautiful” amber, a waveform of the take, the score 94% clear, and the word card showing that things sounds like THINGZ, its th marked, with a tip on how to say it.
Misheard. A listener would hear another word: Parrot shows which.
Sounded off. Close, but the sounds didn't match well.
Your take. Every try is kept, with your score and pace.
01 · Check

A verdict for every word you say.

Whisper, an AI speech recognition model, writes down what it heard without knowing your text, and a second AI model scores how each sound matched. Together they find the words a listener would trip over.

  • Red when it was heard as another word, with what was heard
  • Amber when it was close, but not quite
  • The same stretch marked on the waveform of your take
A sentence with beautiful marked amber and things marked red and tagged heard sinks, above a waveform of the take with the same stretches in amber and red.
02 · Learn

Hear how it should sound.

Click any word: see it spelled the way it sounds, with the stressed syllable in capitals and its IPA, then hear it alone, slowly, or right after your own.

  • About 135,000 words from the CMU Pronouncing Dictionary
  • Your word cut out of your take, then the correct one
  • Each sound of your word marked, with a tip for the weakest
  • Record just that word, as often as you like
The word card for things: sounds like THINGZ, IPA θɪŋz, then its sounds th, i, ng and s as you said them, th marked, with a tip on how to say th.
03 · Practise

Anything you need to say out loud.

An interview answer, a talk, a wedding toast. Paste it once and practise it whole, sentence by sentence, or in short parts cut at commas.

  • Your texts are kept, with where you left off
  • Read to you at the speed you choose, each word lit as it's spoken
  • Fix its words at any time: the parts you change are scored again
The new-text box with a wedding toast pasted in, and the choice to practise it whole, in 4 sentences or in 6 short parts.
04 · Talk

Or just talk.

Tell a story or answer an interview question, with nothing to read. Parrot writes down what you say as you talk, so it's ready moments after you stop, and shows how each word came out.

  • Up to 30 minutes, stopped whenever you like
  • Prompts to talk about: interviews, small talk, presentations
  • Your pace, and every pause of over a second
  • Fix a word it misheard, then keep the talk as a text to practise
What Parrot heard of a talk: Hi, I'm Alex, with Alex underlined as a name, a pause of 1.4 seconds marked after three years ago, really marked amber, and the score 96% clear at 130 words a minute.

Your voice never leaves your computer.

The AI models run on your own machine (Whisper for speech recognition, wav2vec2 for the sound scores), offline once they are downloaded. Nothing to sign up for, nothing sent anywhere. (Pick a system voice marked “online” and it sends the text it reads, never your recordings, to its provider. “Check for updates” in Settings asks GitHub for the latest version, only when you click it.)
